    Question Mazak vs Deckel maho

    Hi there.

My company is planning to buy a 5 axis machining center, and have been looking at a mazak variaxis II. But the problem is that its physical to high to get in where we are atm,and to get a new location, will take several years

Instead we looked at the Deckel maho DMU 80 monoblock, that is much smaller and will fit right in at the place we are now.

My question is; what is the difference between the 2 centers? The DMU was quiet alot cheaper than the Mazak.

The machines will be used at our maintenance departement, for all kinds of materials, and not for production.

    Regards Naits

It all depends on what kind of service you will get. Both brands seem to be built well, and do a great job, when they are working... In the weastern part of North America, Mazak has terrible service, especially on machines that have more than 3 axis. I don't know how DMG service is.
On all equipment there are 2 levers...
    Lever "A", and Lever F'in "B"

    DMG

If you think Mazak service is bad, you have not seen bad until you call DMG ! BTW the 5 axis DMG is a Chinese type machine, not German. Okuma and Mori both have better product than the DMG and usually better support IMO.

I know people running Deckel Maho's with highest satisfaction.

Get the fact: No one makes machines without Chinese parts anymore.

    re

Not true at all. Some machines may have some chinese "parts" but are still assembled and tested in Germany, Japan, etc. The DMG 5 axis lines ARE MADE IN CHINA. I have looked at both our Okuma's and Mori's and worked for years on both, and have yet to find a chinese part. ( unless it's the taiwan Okuma). Thats not to say all Chinese stuff is bad, It's just he was comparing price from a Mazak ( Japanese ) to a Chinese machine. I will still stand by the fact DMG service is terrible anywhere but Europe. The president of DMG will agree as well, since I spoke with him about it personaly at a show. We and our sister company (VERY LARGE COMPANY) are currently scrapping all the Deckels and DMG because of parts and service issues.

    Thanks for answers

And you are right, service is something that will matter big time in our final choice....atm i am running an Arix cnc(3-axis) that is very hard to get parts and service on.

But according to the DMG site http://www.gildemeister.com/en,plant,pfronten, the DMU is made in Germany?

Oh,and btw, i am in Norway, not that far from Germany

    DMG

You will probably be in OK shape with service then. I have called DMG Germany in the past with reasonable results. DMG US is horrible. Good luck with your decision.

    DMG support

    Hey UNDERTHETIRE,

Try calling DMG Canada if you want better support. 1-905-795-2891 and ask for Greg at the hotline department.

I was at an auction last year that had a Deckel Maho 5 axis and was having a chat with one of the programmers that was attending the auction and he was telling me that the machine was basically responsible for the company going bankrupt. He told me that the spindle bearings were replaced 3 times in the 5 years since they bought it new. He told me service would take over a month to get the spindle bearings replaced. He was telling me the repair bill was 30k cdn each time. Apparently the machine was never crashed. I don't know how good the service is in the US but apparently service in Canada is crap.
