Blind grease groove

Don't even ask, but this is what "they" want....
I need to cut a ID straight grease groove in a large part in a Horizontal and it can not break out the sides. It has to be .125 wide and .062 deep x 2.5 long.
Any one have any tooling they have used for such an application?

Thanks

On a lathe: With spindle off, and a tool somewhat like a boring bar ground to the feature needed, feed in by hand and take about 0.002" a pass. I have cut keyways in holes using this method (learned from an old timer). On a mill the same method turned 90 degrees might work. Or a 1/8 end mill in a long holder with the head at an angle ( 15 degrees?), feed by cranking up the knee. The lathe is probably better. In fact let us know what machines you have.

Thanks for your reply Jim. While we are on the same track and we have kicked around the ideas, it won't work for this part. It is a 350 lb casting in a HAAS HS 1600 horizontal. We did look at the endmill on an angle, but it is to deep to reach the full depth at the angle needed. The bore dia is 2 1/16 and 2.5" deep.
We might just have to manually drag a bar much as you stated as in the lathe.
Thanks again, the quest goes on.

I've used an extended reach die grinder once in a while, with a ball shaped lollipop style burr to get in and grind some grooves. This was done on a lathe where the grinder could be cocked at any required angle to clear the bore. Maybe if you have an adjustable angle head for your machine you could rig up some extensions for the burr and do the same sort of thing, albeit, at a slower speed than burrs like to be run at.

Glad I could help. If you have one you will find numerous uses for it.
Thanks.
