Hello all,

I just ordered a G4000 lathe, and was wondering about quick change tool post?

I see that Harbour Fraight has a complete set for 89$

It made me wonder becasue I was looking through the KBC catalog and there toolpost are a heck of alot more.

My question is are KBC toolposts for more then 2 times the price that much better oif a product? ands if not the KBC tool post then whos?

Any ways, my mill and lathe should be here next week, and I am jsut wondering. I know I could use the tool post that comes with the lathe, but its so much nicer to switch tools around with a quick change set up.

I must say you do get what you pay for.
I have bought (at 2 different times) "inexpensive import" change posts for my 2 lathes (from the same place even). the dovetail fitment is different on both and my tooling wont swap from machine to machine.
Apperently there was a design and they werent guarenteed interchangeable.
These units are perfectly fine for a small shop or personal use.
If you want to have your tools set and be able to index or change them out (lets say to run multiple parts without measuring just using readout settings) they aren't good enough.
You have to decide what you need. A $2000 dollar Aloris unit is not always necessary.

I had over the weekend desided that I don't want a 89$ set (5 holders and a post) It jsut really looks cheap.

Umm, I am thinking I may buy one of the ones I have been looking at in the KBC catalog. I figured I would buy the post and a couple holders and as I needed more holders I would buy them.

Umm, I am thinking that starting off slow with tool might be a good idea, maybe just buy some of the more expencive stuff as needed.

I bought that tool post and put it on my mini lathe, I like it, pretty good although I dont know what size tool holders or where to find what I need for extras.

I bought one for mine off ebayfor $149 with 2 tool holders/cutoff/nurl/boring bar holder. I think it was jts machinery or something i bought it from. Great tool post and I put it throught some rought times and no probs. Just type in quick change tool post.

I dont know how big the lathe its going on, but the reason I wouldnt use that is that its made out of anodized aluminum rather than steel.

I definately wouldnt buy any holder that is not solid steel. The heavier the better. Mass absorbs vibration.

Checkout Lathemaster.com.....I just ordered one for my Lathemaster 8x14 lathe...it is suppose to be hardened steel....we'll see when it arrives tomorrow. I paid $169.00 also it's the Wedge Type....he has one for $159 for your lathe size.
