How to slit on a mill?

Folks,

I have a few projects that I need to slit a groove 0.10'-0.15' wide @0.5' - 0.7' deep in a stock. I need it done on a mill sliding going X or Y axis. I cant seem to find any R8 tools to do so? Can anyone point me in a right direction?

Horn Tools

Horn Tools

You can try these people maybe they might have some small slitting saw inserts.

Some of their boring bars go down to 0.3mm dia

Slitting saw arbors are readily available with straight shanks that you can grip with an R8 or ER collet. You won't find as many arbors with R8 shanks.

for the depth you want you might need to step up to a larger diameter saw depending on the OD of the arbor

For a slot of that depth I would strongly recommend using only a slotting saw that uses an arbor with a driving key. If budget allows, look at an insert-type saw that can really get through the part easily, such as the Valenite V350. The one that would work best would be a V350 A08 12 30 C09. It's a 4" diameter, 1.25" bore, takes "30" seat-size inserts. Inserts should be VSG 3.10 N30-SC. Grades are VP5815 for most materials, or VP5845 of it's a slower-speed spindle. Those inserts are a cut width of .123", right near the middle of your tolerance.

You'll need a stub arbor that fits your machine. You should be able to find an R8 stub arbor on Ebay. You'll probably need at least 2-3 HP to use it effectively, otherwise it'll take 2 or three depth passes. You can download the Valenite Milling Catalog (2007) from their website as a PDF file, and look for pages B3 for the cutter, B4 for the inserts. Those are the catalog page numbers, not the PDF file page numbers.
