Arrow A Few X3 Questions

I'm currently considering getting an X3 from Harbor Freight and I’ve come up with a few questions.
1. Can the X3 cut its own CNC motor mounts before I do the conversion to CNC? (Assuming I become somewhat proficient with it)
2. Its listed with great Z-axis travel (18 inches) but I’d imagine the cutting depth is still limited to the length of the bit so several inches about is that true?
3. Is the resolution/rpm of the X3 such that I’d be able to make smooth 3D surfaces on it? Will it be so rough and stepped that polishing it to a near shine would take as much effort as the initial design and setup and necessitate an artist's naivety and ambition?

Thanks a lot guys I apreciate the time.

Klaymonster,

A very good surface finish can be obtained when a small step over is used.

A mirror finish will require polishing.

Yes it is possible to cut your own motor mounts on the X3.

You will need a lathe to machine the lead screws.

Extra long length end mills are available 6 - 8 inches, multiple passes are required for deep cuts.

Question

Anyone? how big of a block can I work with on an X3? It lists as having area of
(15 7/8") x (5 3/4") x (14 3/4"); so am I to believe i could stick a block having those dimensions onto it and start cutting?

Also it lists as having Spindle travel of (3 3/8") so to make a pocket to or near the bottom of the block it couldnt be a block much taller then that is that correct? thanks!

Klaymonster,

If you CNC the X3 the Z travel would be the amount the head moves up and down not the Spindle travel.

Most CNC users completely lock the spindle so it never moves up or down.

The Y and Z axis will be your limitation, you could re index the X axis and use long material.
