Unhappy OD Grinding Stainless Steel

Any tips or helpful info on OD grinding stainless steel would be appreciated.

We are trying to grind a 6' diameter stainless steel drum using a Dumore tool post grinder and a 12" diameter wheel. Speed and feeds for doing this would help alot.

Using a silicon carbide (green) wheel.

We are not OD grinders by trade so any help in this area would be greatly appreciated.

How thick are the walls of the drum? Do you get harmonic vibration/chatter? Do you have access to the inside (put liquid inside)?

In another life we had a crew that ground 15' dia. cast iron dryer drums while installed in paper machines. Used traversing belt grinder rig for those.

Also ground thin walled chill rolls back in the shop.

I have no idea what your set-up is. Can you 'splain?

Here's the rest of the story

The walls on this tank are made of 317 stainless and are perforated with 9/16" holes, the holes spacing is quit close. The drum contains 17,478 holes. The shell is welded with Inconel. Vibration does not seem to be an issues.

By the way the walls are 1/4" thick.

It was suggested to me that we use a Silicon Carbide wheel.

Thanks for the help...

Pat

Pat, the wheel manufacturer is probably your best source for application info. Surface finish requirement, Coolant etc. will be required.

I've used a grinding attachment on a VTL, worked fine. A large dedicated vertical grinder would be ideal but not always available.

How long is the workpiece?

add: Be careful on the coolant. Some coolants can soften the bond, particularly the old style resin or shellac bonded green wheels.

The drum is 6' long, once we get a little water under our feet with this type of grinding we will be able to market this as a service to our customers.
