Moving Metal

Just thought I'd post some pics of how I transported my new-to-me Lagun mill. It was my first time moving a machine and it went pretty well. Luckily the seller had a fork lift. My old single axle trailer hauled it just fine with 50 psi in the tires. The sled I made from 4x4 posts great too.

Now all I gotta do is find a deal on a vise, collets and test indicator and I'll be in business.

My press brake (out of view) was the anchor for the chain.

Rolled it on 3/4 pipe

Whoa! You didn't worry about the tires or axle on that trailer? I own a trailer like that, but I only use it to haul chip barrels... I did use it for a 12X36 lathe, but had the bridgeports delivered via flat bed.

Excellent! You are now officially hooked. Save the pipes You'll need them again. Wouldn't hurt to inform the boss (I assume that's her by the truck ) that you will soon be needing more space.

As for the other parts if the dealer made enough on this sale he should be happy to find some of the parts you need. I'll check on this end if you want.

Well I'd be lying if I said I wasn't concerned at all. But since the axle is rated @ 3,500 lbs, less the trailer weight of about 1,000 and the mill weights 2,500 I knew it would be ok. The tires are new. I don't recall the rating but it was much higher than the load.

Thanks for the offer John. I found a good used Kurt vise on ebay and collets and parallels from MSC. Got a manual for it too. I'm I little stuck on the test indicator tho. Way too many types to choose from. -ted

I use a fancy Starret dial test indicator for tramming and locating the vise and one of those electronic edge finder units for locating parts. I mostly make setups for drilling at accurate distances but occasionally have to do a die or a locating setup for my press.

I only use Interapid. My first one lasted me 10 years until I made a mistake that ripped the tip off. After 15 years of machining every day, I'm only on my second indicator $250 well spent.

When shopping for a manual I found two sources. Lagun wanted $75 and there is an ebay seller that has reproductions for $50. A good manual is important so despite the high price I decided to go with the genuine article because I figured it would be higher quality.

A few days after i get the manual the invoice shows up. Those Bastages charged me $17.42 S&H for a 12 oz package! Now I'm closing in on 100 bucks for 60 sheets of paper. That's outrageous. So I call and the unprofessional, unhelpful parts girl tells me the shipping was $7.42, we charged you $10 handling. That's just criminal.

There are other parts I need for the machine. She quoted me $95 for a drawbar. So if my first order is any indication they will want $35 to ship the frigg'in thing.

So here's my question. Is there supplier other than the dealer that sells parts for a Lagun machine?

BTW. McCarr carries the drawbar and quill handle for the Lagun but that's it.

I dunno- I give my parts away and make my money on shipping and handling. Seriously tho what would it take to get a copy from you?

Why do you need a drawbar? Didn't one come with the machine? Can't the guy you bought it from get one?

OUCH! Should of bought a Bridgeport. Could give you multiple suppliers for higher quality parts, CHEAPER. Sorry about that.

Not to panic. Yes the Bridgeport is a more popular and cheaper machine but the Lagun is more solid. The dealer who sold you the machine should be able to get a drawbar - it should be free if it was bad.
