HELP NEEDED! : VEB DLZ500 metal lathe

Hi everybody! I just joined this forum today, so I am new to this.
HELP NEEDED!
A friend of mine has a VEB, Model DLZ500 German metal lathe, and he has a problem with the thread gearbox. ( I don't know the technical terms for these things because I am used to hearing them in Spanish; I live in Costa Rica) The problem is this: when he activates the the auto advance system, the thread shaft also starts turning and the gears jam and then it pops out again. He is afraid that if he takes the gearbox apart, he can't put it back together again. And since he can't make threads or use the advance system it is a big problem. Does anybody know anything about what might be the problem, or can tell me where to get a diagram of the thread gearbox, or give me an address to contact for help, or any related help? I would be extremely grateful for any help. Thanks, Claudio

I am not familiar with that lathe but most of them should have a engage lever for the feed, and one for the threading (engaging the half nuts) on the carriage. The two levers should be interlocked to keep them from both being engaged at the same time.

The gearbox maybe just fine, or just on the point of engaging threading or feedscrew.

Make sure the levers on the carriage are not engaged, this can be verified by moving the carriage handwheel to move it towards and away from the chuck.

Then with the motor off, engage the gearbox for thread screw or feed screw, then rotate the chuck by hand to verify only one screw is turning.

Most lathes have a lever for selecting the different screws and the speeds of the screws, and then another lever for engaging the selected screw with the drive train gears.

Hope this helps.

Arnie

About WMW VEB DLZ 500

Sorry guys. There was a bit of a misunderstanding between the owner and me here. The problem I mentioned is or can be fixed. Actually, what they need now is the instruction charts that tell you how to put the levers to make a certain thread. Apparently sombody took them off and pasted fake ones on because they are just glued on without ribets or anything. You can see the holes where the original ribets were holding the plaques that had the charts on them but they are gone. The lathe (to be more exact) is a WMW VEB DLZ500 Model EIV 1300 It also has the number 1430018.50. Thanks for the help that was given, Arnie. This lathe is probably about the only one in North America. Thanks: Claudio
