I am trying to figure out how to cut interrupted threads. Can someone give some guidance as to what the process is and what I will need for tooling? Thanks
Both the id and od threads are removed in sections that allow a bayonet type slip fit and 1/4 turn tightening.
Also known as a breech block.
One example
The process will be different depending on size of the screw and length of the thread. A cnc mill would be nice, but a rotary table or some form of 4th axis. Work holding may prove to be a challenge.
Basically, tighten the screw to seat it, and reference mark the mating parts. Then use the reference marks to establish the areas for thread section removal. The sections to be removed are clocked 180 degrees from each other and 90 degrees between the mating threads.
Sounds like an interesting project. Good luck!
