On most machines, once the spindle is orientated and the tool change complete, the spindle is free to turn, is the resistance in low gear just because of the back-loading due to the reduction?
Al.
Is this a problem or not? After the spindle orientation is done and new tool is in the spindle, I can turn the spindle by hand.I put the spindle in low gear, now I can not turn it. When the spindle is in high gear, I can turn it. This is on a Mori-Seiki HG500 CNC. Any comments?

Are sure you cannot turn it? Get hold real tight and try real hard. As Al says you are back driving the motor through up gearing so the motor has to turn faster than the spindle.
An open mind is a virtue...so long as all the common sense has not leaked out.
