I want to cnc my rotary table and I am looking for ideas

Hi,
I have an 8" Phase II rotary table, a spare servo motor, a gecko drive, and I want to cnc it!

Has anybody done this or have any suggestions on a good way to do the mechancial setup?

If anyone has a url to site that has some pictures, it would be appreciated. I would hate to "do it my way" only to find a site that has done it a better way.

Any help will be appreciated.

I like it, but Marvin, if you are still out here, is that a servo or a stepper?

I am concerned about the need for a reduction between the servo motor and the input shaft?

Any thoughts?

Thanks buscht, Bubba, it is a stepper but a servo with the correct drive would work just as well. There really isn't much load on it. I only have the one rotary table so I added the stepper so I could return the unit to it's original configuration if needed.

Probably sould clarify that. There was no modification to the rotary table except for drilling a couple of holes for the motor mount cap screws. Take the motor off then put the handle and vernier dial back on.

Thanks for the info, I am just concerned about using a servo in direct drive. sure would be easier to do if I do it direct drive.

May just do it to see how it works. Heck, I can always redo it if it doesn't work:})

I have some servos but don't have them rigged where I can test them or I would let you know how they work. My rotary table is 72:1 so it it geared pretty low anyway, that is why I am guessing it might work fine with a direct drive servo. If I can be of any more help, just sing out.

Thanks for the thoughts. I just might give it try to see what happens in a test situation. If it works, then make a GOOD setup instead of a kludge.

hey bubba where did you get your 8" phase rotary table? have you hooked it up yet? is there very much backlash?

As I remember, I got it from MSC (on sale) when I made one of my trips to Atlanta. Dit it that way to save on the shipping. I have used it a few times, and have not noticed any appreciable backlash. I have not done a test setup yet to verify that so I am just going on eyeball. I turn the handle and the table starts to move. Reverse direction, and again the table starts to move immediately. Not like my mill/drill was where it was real easy to see and feel the backlash.

I purchased a 10 PhaseII from Enco (they had the best price by far) maybe a couple months ago and there is plenty of backlash in mine, the instructions even tell you to always crank it one direction because of this.

PS: I would like to cnc mine at some point but for now I just chucked up a socket in my drill and crank it that way. At 90 to 1 that beats hand cranking.
