I want to convert this mill to cnc.
I remove horizontal head and planned to put steel tube and router see pic.
What kaind acme ( trapezoidal ) screws and stepper motors ( torque ) to use.

It's not too complicated. You may want too make the head base from a casting. But thats more complicated.

I can see some big large steel beams being used and mounting everything together that way.

How do you plan on surfacing the cut part too have the new head mounted precisely?

First I want convert 3axis to cnc and after I will see how to mount head together.
Now I need to know what kaind acme screws and stepper motors to use ( how much torque do I need for milling aluminium, brass, copper, plastic, wood). Is it Ok to use acme screw with more starts or acme screw with more starts is not good for milling aluminium.
Original acme screw is 1/2 but I will like to use 5/8.

ToneV8- I was thinking originally the same thing. I would keep the the head the way it is and modify that for spindle. Not the whole head assembly.

I would do 5/8 for CNC. As far as torque goes, I'm not sure in your case, because factors of your table weight, ratios all come into play. I'm not sure how big your mill will be, but I can see something being in the 700 Oz range...Just an estimation.

This is interesting, as the base, knee, and table castings are often available from parted out machines on ebay.

I am surprised that more people haven't used these for a start point on a build.

The advise to use the head as is, with gearing to change the spindle speed is a good one. There are horizontal to vertical heads, that mount on the overarm available (but rare) already.

The table is approximately 18''x4,5'' Z axis 6''
My mill is not bigger then Sieg X3 mill.
People who have Sieg X3 mill use X,Y axis 425oz for Z axis 600oz.
Can I use 425oz for my mill.

For the motor lifting the knee and table, you may well want to go with a larger motor as the x3 does for the head.

Not many people are modifying this machine, as far as I can tell, so there is not going to be too much info out there.

So, if you convert to ball screws, you may be one of the first to do so.

I have one of these, mostly in pieces so I'll be following what you do

There are no space for ball screws. Nuts are to big to put under table.
