    Running mill horizontally?

Any reason I should not do this? The mill is geared head and oil filled. I'm still relatively new to mills so any info appreciated.

    Probably okay.

Run the machine at top speed vertically for 30 minutes or so and see if the gearbox gets warms.

Let it cool all the way down and then repeat with it horizontal; if it starts getting warmer or makes a distinctly different noise, stop and don't use it at full speed or for a long time that way.
An open mind is a virtue...so long as all the common sense has not leaked out.

It will depend on the cantilever side forces now exerted on the Z slide by situating the spindle horizontal, I would think.
Thats appears top be a lot of weight hung out to one side.

I haven't been able to test yet due to rain, and time. Yes, there is a lot of weight hung out on the left -- it was heavy holding up the motor side while tightening the bolts. But the quill is CNC'ed on this, so the whole head isn't moving. And the quill won't need to move when sideways -- just the table.
