    Lathe Auto Turret Design WIP

Hey all. Finished getting the basics of my auto tool post done in SolidWorks and would love some comments. Its not done. Nothing has its final dimensions buts its plenty good enough to understand theory. It will be used for a custom CNC mini lathe I will also be designing. One thing at a time though! Used hirth couplings as its locking mechanism but anything similar could be used in its place. Only thing not seen is where the stepper motor will mount or the clearance for the belt. Let me know what you guys think. =)

Thanks a lot. Enjoy the photo's.

I like your idea of pushing back the hirth coupling instead of using pins and holes in the "head" for alignment. Ive been working on a turret myself, and i see the aligment as a problem in the machining. Only problem i can see is that, depending on the force the axes maybe due to torque, but if is for a small lathe there is proberly no problem there

    Hi,

I'm not sure how you plan to control the turret from software, Mach3? I done a few turret controllers using the ModIO I've designed and sell. I'd be happy to work with you on the controller side if you need help in that area.

BTW nice design. What actuators are you planning to use to operate the mechanism?

    Cheers,

    Peter.

Sorry for taking so long to respond. I gotta agree the spindle probably cant take the torque from the tooling. I'll beef it up a bit more on this next revision. I need to calculate how much force will be at the cutter then I'll put it into COSMOS and see just how much deflection we'll really get. I'm guessing things will be fine!

Yeah I plan to control everything in Mach. Board wise I haven't really picked it out. Thanks for the offer. I may take you up on it. Though it wont be for some time. I had originally planned to use a mini solenoid to run a 3-way valve but have since moved to an actuator to run the 3-way valve. I'll post up a quick draft of how it would work. Need a few minutes!

Here's the 3 way and how the hose will be connected. An actuator will be attached to the piston. Stroke will be short. Around 10-15mm. I haven't looked at any specific actuators yet.

Is it a valve? Cant you just buy one, looks timeconsuming to make

Its not too time consuming to make but yes they can be bought, and will. I'll be looking for a magnetic actuator so I don't have to run air lines to both the 3 way and the actuator.

Next thing I need to do is get the tool holders drawn up.

There is too much mass and too small a pulley for a steppermotor to turn that.
I has that problem turning a carosel on our 12 tool toochanger on our routers.

Your locking design doesn't look strong enough, it should be locking at near the diameter of the turret.
A heavy metal dog may do the trick.

Originally that was the tool changer I was going to make. But after going through all the draws I figured there had to be a simpler way. And my design...at least I think... is much less complicated. The couplings can be bought. And indexing accuracy can be as high as you want to spend the money on. Theres 21 unique parts on the German tool changer and many multiples. This design only has 13(not including o-rings, screws, or pneumatic parts) and the only multiple parts are the bearings.

Should be a great little tool changer once its done! Cant wait to get more work done on it.
