I'm building a milling head for an IH size machine. I aquired a spindle from a Hurco mill. I intend to attach this spindle to a 1 1/2" thick piece of HRS with two saddles, machined from 1 1/4" steel. Like the IH, only the head will move, the quill will not telescope. I hope I'm describing this correctly; the saddles will look like the mains in an engine.
I have two questions:
Should I machine the hole and then saw the saddle in half to get the two pieces, or should I start with two pieces bolted together?
How tight should I make the hole? I want it tight but don't want to hurt the Hurco quill; I have no idea how thick its housing is.
All thoughts appreciated.
