    Servo Resolution

    I have a damaged servo encoder on the back of a 1KW motor. Motor damaged in shipping !!! It is a 500 CPR, can I replace it with 1000 CPR or are motors and encoders matched. 500 CPR only gives 0.01 mm per step and I would like better. (Drive from a 3d milling machine) Thanks Wallace New Zealand.

    Probably but you'll be sure to have to "tell your computer" somehow about the CPR change. This is usually don in a paramter list or configuration file that the controller refers to at start/boot up.

    Otherwise, you'll probably experience a drastic change in the feedback response characteristics

    You did not mention what controller you have, as NC mentioned, you will have to rescale the feedback resolution, most sytems multiply the basic count x4 so the 500 was giving you 2000c/rev a 1000 B.C. enc. would give you 4000 counts/rev.
    Also what to watch for is if the motor is a BLDC or AC servo, the commutator tracks may be on the encoder disk.
    If DC motor then there should be no concern over this.

    The motor is a Torque Systems. It is about 2 KW DC. It has a tacho feedback and a Data Technology Encoder on the end of the shaft mounted within the motor housing. It was driven with a Westamp (or Servo Dynamics) 140Volt 20 amp Controller. I am changing to Mach 3 and Uhu controllers.
