I believe Sumtak is now tied in with Renco encoders in the US.
I would try them, or alternatively, if you know the specs, try Hengstler for equivalents. You should not have to pay $1600 for an encoder.

My lathe has a Sumtak IP 11256 encoder. It's been giving some problems for some time, but now it has completely screwed up. I sent it to a place called Hartel, but he said he can't repair it due to the epoxy coating on the boards. I've been quoted $1600 for a replacement from Galco. ANy suggestions? I found a similar encoder on ebay but I don't know if it will work for me. It is an IP 031R. Surely somebody somewhere has one of these they would sell. Or somebody can repair it for me.![]()

Well, I finally got it fixed. I sent it to Oracle Encoder Service. Very nice people and a good price. Got it back about three weeks ago. Working great now.
