Baldor Tool Grinder Question

I (a noob) picked up this old grinder on the cheap while attending a metal scraping seminar last week. It has the trays under each wheel AND cups under the trays? Is this a standard setup, and what's the purpose of the cups, since the trays don't drain into them? Or is this a mix of multiple parts put together?

Thanks,

The cups are for dripping coolant on your cutter and the trays collect it. It is a manual recirculating system dating back to the Romans.

That is the standard arrangement for that type of grinder.

What type of wheels are on that grinder?

Nice write up on the scraping class, by the way - looking forward to hearing/seeing more of your experience there. Nice work!

No, see that's what's weird, these are not the water cups that mount on the pins on the top, these mount below the trays? (click on the pic for more) BTW, I see what you mean about not taking off ALL the paint and fill. The casting would take forever to get smooth again.

Just a thought...

Perhaps they for holding additional coolant for refilling the drip cups that sit on the pins.

Yep, they're for drinking on the job. And after you're done, they're used to hold the other yellow liquid.

The next day, rinse, repeat!!

Well, I'm still not sure why I need the lower cups (or whether to even use them), but the quick retro is complete. No, I didn't go crazy with Bondo and all, but for a dirt cheap find, this baby is one solid piece of equipment. I know it's just a grinder, but now I can grind my carbide scrapers, which will be used to scrape my BP ways, which can then be retrofitted...

Click on the picture for the full restoration.

Oh and BTW, a 12oz. will not fit

hey that looks great! read up on grinding carbide, without proper dust extraction its not very healthy - lots of cobalt and other nasties released when it's ground - those trays are to catch coolant, don't know what the cups underneath are for. saw one the other day had cups mounted above the wheels with a drip tube to the wheel.
