Im new, Ive spent 5K, need pricing help PLEASE :/

Hi, Thank you for being here! Im out of my base of knowledge and I feel like I need to ask knowledgeable people... and you guys seem to be it. So first, let me say hi! and thank you! David

Q: I had an idea for a new accessory/device for pistols. So, I found what I believe is a good quality shop. They do really nice pieces, as far as my limited knowledge tells me, (what my eyes see)...... they mostly do medical stuff.

So, it cost me 5 grand to get a complete set of specs and plans. They are really nice. Then I figured, ok, were gonna giddy up now, and start punching out pieces right? I mean he made all the plans...
Then, he tells me its gonna be 9 K to set up all the machines to run the pieces. We are also supposed to be using a dip brazing process.
Maybe looking at the piece will give you an idea of what I'm talking about.

So my question is, bottom line, is that at all within reason? Am I being treated right here? its gonna cost me almost 20K to put out my first 100 pieces? woww! Your input would be greatly appreciated! Dave

Now that you have a complete set of specs and plans, you can take them out to bid at a number of shops. Get bids from 10 or 15 on 1000 pieces. You'll get an idea pretty quickly of what are reasonable versus unreasonable prices.

The part does not look hard for a good CNC shop to build.

Interesting piece of equipment you have invented. I would place a RFQ on the site and look for a people on this site that live in FL. Many people here are doing excellent work.

Searching for your patent and can't find it any Patent numbers?

it all depends on what type of fixtures the have to make as well as special tooling needed

how many machines the have to tie up

are the doing any process development for you?

one would have to study the model of your product to answer your question correctly

after the machine applications are developed whats the price per part for future runs

Hi, thanks for your answers.
1) I cant do a thousand pieces unless their charging 5/8 dollars per.
2) I have to admit I dont know what an RFQ (request for qoute?) my guess.
So, I reckon from what Im reading here in general is to get qoutes.
Currently its under pat pending status so it won't show up with a patent # yet---- Pat Pend # 60/860,969 wor4 tacrail vers. 2

My next quandry , I suppose if I want a real qoute, Im gonna have to show all my drawings. Since I have a pat pend, I guess no worries, but I m also curious thoughts on a NDA as well?

showing job shops your drawings should not be too risky, especially with that pat. pending..

however, almost any model shop\cnc shop will sign a non disclosure for you..

just tell them you are brining one before you spring it.

Requires an NDA, and it requires that the product be built to
"MilSpec/Combat Usage specs" which means its gotta be tough.
My current intent is to use either 6061 or 7071 Al. If someone has
a better idea for material, Im open to hearing it.
Actually I'm open to lots of stuff otherwise I guess I wouldn't be
in here.
So far I have been contacted by one person and am in the process of
sending him nda.

awesome. while i know nothing about guns, it is always cool to see people in advanced stages of developing their special idea.

have you read anything much about patenting? it is possible that your disclosure in a public forum (private with NDA is fine) of your product while patent pending will make it very difficult for you to get any foregin patent protection.. i am totally unqualified to give this advice though. also, it may matter little to you, as the patents for europe, asia, etc.

then, i suppose you may be looking to liscense or sell your patents. if you have trouble finding information, i can easily look it up for you(the foreign patent issue) - but again, my advice is free and from some person on the internet.

I put a couple of RFQ's out there and got very good pricing and awesome service. Put a post out there and see what you get - I bet it will be magnitudes less than what your considering paying now.
