Talking New Mill Question

I've recently purchased a new mill from Wholesale Tool, they have a location up here near me. And on the suggestion of checking them out in one of the posts up here on the board, found a nice new import mill, for a great price.
It's listed on their page as a Gearhead drill / Mill, but the model # listed on it is the FX 28, The one that we got is a much newer updated looking model, with a model ID of : FX 40
It's a 1 1/2 HP 120vac, 38 1/2 " bed 9" of X travel and about 12 " of Z travel. I'm looking online to find out who manufacture's this beast of a machine, but I can't find out a dam thing on it..... It's painted white with / Blue and almost looks like it came from JET.
Oh, did I mention that my shop is in the " UPstairs " part of the garage........I forgot how much 650lbs of cast iron really is......but when broken down to 3 pieces myself and a friend were able to carry it up.

If you're in the market for a bigger machine......this is a pretty good deal from what I've found. It's out there for $1,195.00
The only backlash I could find was on the cross travel the X axis I believe, which was " .04 " is this considered really bad or decent according to the industry ?

thanks for any info in advance,

Arthur

CCM,There are a number of Chi Com and Taiwanies manufacture producing machines like you describe in your post, Ronf Fu being the best known amoung the pack. Another is Sieg. Normally the 11/2 hp modles are round column with the kind of travel you decribe, the good news is your Z travel is about twice that of the average mill/drill. Sure is a lot of after market add on for your new machine. I'll bet you will enjoy this machine!

The backlash might be something you can "tune out" of it. .04" backlash would most likely not be the actual clearance of the new nut in the new screw, but would largely be due to the clearance between the screw's thrust shoulder and the machine. You can likely shim this with spacer washers, or perhaps there is an adjustable element creating the "shoulder" on the screw which can be moved axially a bit.
