So what's the low down on the BIRMINGHAM lathe? How would you rate the quality of the machine, the cleanliness upon arrival, the precision, etc, etc?

Would you give us a review of it once you get a chance to play with it?

    We need answers, darn it!

    Cool

No problem, as soon as it arrives, and I play shuffel with the bridgport, lathe and surface grinder while trying to fit them all in a 9x25 section of my garage shop! (half of my two car garage) Then I need to fit all my toolboxes in there too!

Then I have to re-wire the whole garage, and find a 3-phase to 1-phase converter for the surface grinder! I just hope there is enough room in my breaker box to fit all the new circuits, as I really do not want to rip a hole in the wall to add an additional breaker box!

Then I need to make a long bar-feeder type support for the back of the lathe, to support those 6-ft acme leadscrews everyone is screaming for!

Then I need to build a 2x4 & plywood partition wall about 6 feet high down the center of the garage, as I must be able to bring my car in the garage during the hurricane season!

As for the Birmingham Lathe, the only problem i see so far is the inability to find a collet closer attachment for 5C collets! I would hate having to retrofit some old trash on to a new lathe!
The headstock on this lathe looks and sounds really solid, even at 2000 RPM it whines really sweet! It has a splash oil bath, which is nice and has an easy to see sight glass!

It just didn't make sense to buy an old clunker at the same price! At least it has a 90-day warentee!

Last but not least, i have a used 9x20 Jet lathe to get rid of!

Yea, it was Sierra Victor Industries, they have a big eBay store, and several warehouses in Port Orange, FL http://www.sierravictor.com/

My new lathe and the grinder are scheduled to arrive on Tuesday 4/18/96
I have arranged to have a rental forklift delivered to my house in the morning, so that I can unload the flat bed truck! I have measured and marked the garage floor with a crayon as to the placement of the machines, and have ordered a heavy duty Phase Converter for 220VAC 1P to 220VAC 3P

This is an expensive little project, it will be nearly 6k before I'm done! Ouch !

    Cool

Yesterday I decided to spend even more money, and ordered a double ball bearing live center with a M3 taper for the lathe's tailstock!

Then I finally found a BRAND NEW 5C collet clooser draw bar that will fit the lathe!
I have a small Aloris type quick change tool post from my old 9x20 lathe, which I will use untill I need a bigger one.
All I need to do now is wait till it arrives to see if I need to get a coolant pump system, and I'll be ready to make some "Blue Chips" !
