Question Real power of Grizzly machines

Hi , I intend to buy soon the Grizzly G0704 mill machine ( BF20 style) and the G0602 lathe.
On the Milling machine they quote the motor as being 1HP.
    Fine I say...
    Then they quote 3Amps@110V...
    Now that can't be!
    1HP equals about 745Watts. Now 745Watts/110V=6,78 Amp.
Whether the motor is DC, 3 phases, brushless or AC 1 phase, it will consume at least 745Watts one way or another! ( plus the normal loss in any electrical circuit)
Can someone shine some light on this issue.
This is not a deal breaker, but Iwould like to clarify this in my mind.
To me, it looks more like a 0.5HP motor, given the size of it also.

(edit) I just found that the gauge of the cable is AWG#18, so definitively, this is not 1 HP!!

For the lathe, I have not checked this issue as of yet.
    Thanks, Luc

Just checked the online manual for the lathe.
The motor is quoted at 1HP and will take 13,5Amp!!!
Now this is 2HP almost, or a very innefficient motor!!

I cant remember exactly but I think the general thought is they are 3/4hp...IIRC mine says 600W on the label...

You might want to look at what types of cuts people are taking with these 2 machines rather than the specs. Chances are what they can do in terms of milling and turning is more a function of rigidity than power. Also the HP and power consumption ratings do not really give you an idea of how much torque the machine has at different RPMs.

Note that grizzly has a wide range of machinery from hobby ones to medium sized manual stuff. They vary tremendously in rigidity, power, etc, etc. So experience on one line of products may not port well to others.

Anyway, IMHE the practical HP of that class of machine is about 60% the stated. That is when you use a milling or drilling calculator you take the power available as 60% of the nominal.

    Good luck!
