    Crude small machine thread

    hello

I want to build a small crude milling machine, and maybe a lathe. This will replace the hand drill I use for my small projects. So should be an easy sucsess..

First I will concentrate on the spindle, as its the most useful and possibly hardest part, so this is the current plan:

Bronze/brass/ptfe plain type bearings - they should do radial loads much better than other *cheap* types, like ball bearings?

Plain shank 1/2" - MT2 holder as the spindle OR plain shank 20mm - ER16 collect tool holder. Im not quite sure which is more useful..

Arc Euro Trade - Extension Sockets (bottom of page)

Chronos Ltd HSS Slitting Saws,Slotting Saws & Holders

Arc Euro Trade - ER16 Collets & Collet Chucks

I think the plain shank MT2 is without a drawbar hole, so the ER16 might be better, but can do less.

second spindle with a slotting saw arbour.

the question is would this work? can plan bearings do radial loads? (im sure most old lathes are the plain type).

    thanks

Why a seperate spindle for the slotting saw? You could use an arbor that fits an ER16 collet or A2ZCNC builds a slotting saw arbor that screws on the ER16 spindle nose. It sounds like you are considering bushings instead of bearings. What kind of rpms are you expecting and how long will you run it at these rpms? I would think you would use some angular contact bearings that you could adjust preload and eliminate run out or play.

The 6th picture down shows an extension for an ER16. This can be used as a spindle by installing some bearings and cutting some threads for a spindle nut or even a clamping collar. Have you ever seen any of Simpsons36 videos on youtube? He creates a few interesting solutions and has something similar to what you desire. Look at this video, YouTube - Simpsons36's Channel
That is a pretty simple ER extension, though the closer I look it might be a 5C or R8 collet and extension.
