miniature end mill holder?

Hi,

I'm new to CNC and Milling and started last year with a Sherline CNC mill. I'm trying to acquire some Miniature Carbide End Mill. (E.g.
Amazon.com: Niagara Cutter MES230 Miniature Carbide End Mill, Uncoated (Bright), 2 Flutes, Stub Square End, 0.0525" Cutting Length, 0.035" Cutting Diameter: Industrial & Scientific Amazon.com: Niagara Cutter MES230 Miniature Carbide End Mill, Uncoated (Bright), 2 Flutes, Stub Square End, 0.0525" Cutting Length, 0.035" Cutting Diameter: Industrial & Scientific
)

I found what I wanted but now I'm a bit unsure what's the best way to mount these miniature end mills.

I found the following (not cheap). (E.g. Microcut Carbide Micro End Mills ) So I was wondering what others use and what works.

Thanks for you feedback.

Regards, Michael

Those seem to have a 1/8" shank so use a 1/8" collet to hold them. Sherline also has 1/8" end mill holders.

Bob,

thanks for the info. I will check it out. Is it wise to place a end mill with a full round shaft in an end mill holder? I was left with the impression that you use the end mills with a flat shaft side (not sure that the term is) and mount them in an end mill with the set screw.

They are called Weldon shanks. You could always grind a small flat on the shank but my preference is to go with a collet for that small a cutter. That should minimize runout.
