Cool How to grind shaft of 2.0 mm diameter

Hi,

I want to grind a shaft of dia 2.0 mm. The length is 20 mm. I am not concerned about clamping space. I will clamp it into a fixture.
What i need to know that is it possible to grind such small diameter on cylindrical grinding machine?

Or on any other alternative machine ?

Thanks
Ash

Why not cylindrical? Is it machine limitation? Is that so that the machine spindle head cannot be traversed until dia of 2.0 mm?

Thanks for your opinion

I gave the correct machine and now you are arguing.

It is a special type of cylindrical grinder

I was just curious to know about limitation of cylindrical grinding machine.

Thanks for your response.

Hi

As you can see in the figure, i want to grind & maintain these 2 step OD ( 2.05 & 1.54 ) in high accuracy & concentricity. If i am looking for concentricity, then i need to do grinding (of these diameters) in single setup.

But on centreless grinder, it is not possible to maintain concentricity because the 2 different diameters will be done in seprate setups.

Do you any ideas to maintain the concentricity of the 2 diameters.

Thanks for your time
Ash

Ash tell us the lengths of what you want to grind without your fixture included.

You didn't mention the reduced diameter on the pin in your first post, you are correct that cannot be done with a centerless grinder.

A centerless grinder should be able to be used for the larger diameter.

How many do you need to make ?

Hi

Please refer attached drawing for length description.

I need to make around 3 to 5 pieces.

Thanks

Your part can be ground easily on a surface grinder with the aid of a Spindex, Harig Grind All or similar device. Start with a larger diameter and enough extra length to be held in the above mentioned fixture. Leave the small end hanging in the air. Grind the large diameter first and then finish the small diameter. When grinding either diameter you may need to supply some support underneath to keep your material from deflecting away from the grinding wheel. I like to use a Popsicle stick. You'll also need to use a fine grit wheel. A coarse abrasive will disintegrate your material.

Could you elaborate how you would use the Popsicle stick, please?

Firstly your fixture should grip the fatter diameter for better rigidity. Secondly 2mm would be a doddle with a cylindrical grinder like the J&S1300 that I have. What I don't have is the time to do it for you!
