Logan Model 200 - Value and Info?

I just purchased a Logan Model 200 metal lathe for $1000.00 from a good friend of mine. From the CNCZone community I am looking for A) a ball park estimate of it's resale value and B) any sources of information that anyone can provide on this lathe. It was his grandfather's machine and he obviously took good care of all of his tools. The machine has a bit of surface rust on the lathe bed ways and some on the lead screw, but it doesn't look like it has caused any serious damage.

The really cool thing about the lathe is that it looks to have just about every single possible accessory with the machine including a toolpost grinder, milling attachment, taper adapter (I think that's what you call it), several chucks, a complete set of change gears, and a few other items. I have yet to unpack the boxes of stuff that goes along with it so who knows what other treasures (aka accessories) I will find. I do not think that it includes a quick-change gear box, meaning there is not one currently attached to the machine already. It also includes the original chip tray and metal legs (two legs and one motor support post).

I already own several large machines including a modern 12x36 metal lathe, cnc mill, and other machines so I bought this machine not for heavy production but for "tinkering". I may use it as a secondary lathe for small jobs or I may decide to sell it if it turns out to be worth significantly more than I paid for it. I spoke with my friend about the possibility of me selling it to ensure that he wouldn't be upset with me selling it for a profit since it was his grandfathers, and he's fine with it.

This Logan lathe has a few features, due to the accessories included, that my modern 12x36 lathe does not include. I'm not sure if those additional features such as the taper turning attachment and the toolpost grinder will make it worth keeping or not.

I'm excited about cleaning this thing up and trying it out. If anyone has information about this lathe I'd be interested in hearing it. It did not come with an instruction manual, so I don't know a lot about how to work it. Just comes from a different era and works quite a bit differently from my modern lathe. It probably will need a new belt. The one already installed is leather and looks extremely worn, not sure if it will last long. So for starters I'll need to figure out how to go about changing that out.

As a final note, along with the lathe itself and lathe accessories, he (my friend) gave me all of his grandfathers old machining hand tools such as old calipers, tool bits, and more that I haven't had a chance to really look through yet. They appear to be quality tools, I was some Starrett names on some of the calipers, but again haven't looked through it all thoroughly.

Sorry, haven't had time to take any pictures yet. If anyone is interested in seeing pictures, please say so in a reply and I'll post them when I get them. It's still in the back of my truck right now.

Damned fine machines. We made loads of money off our Logan, especially because of the turret. Plain old simple lathe, nothing fancy, and it worked.

We paid about $1200 for ours, years and years ago. It's still worth $1200.

Our belt was a flat leather with the metal "staples". There's a fixture that will open them up, and close them for changing belts. If you ever actually needed to change the belt. We never did.

Btw, back gear is a little pin on the side of the big gear, inside the headstock.

Thanks for the reply!

I've gone through most of the boxes of stuff now and found a steady rest in addition to the other stuff I already listed.

I found a multitude of tool bits, drill chucks, and other tooling as well. I'm hoping maybe someone who owns one of these will fill me in on whether the milling attachment for the lathe also makes use of a horizontal milling arbor. I found what looks to be a horizontal milling arbor in the boxes of accessories, but as far as I know, the original owner of the lathe did not own a milling machine, so I'm wondering if it goes with the lathe or not. The milling attachment that I recognized immediately is a vise with a dovetail groove in the bottom. I suppose I'll have to figure out how exactly it attaches to the lathe to see if perhaps the horizontal milling arbor mounts somehow between the headstock and tailstock. It may not go with the lathe at all though.

I'll be unloading it from the truck today. I'll take some pictures of it in it's current condition. I'll most definitely polish up the lathe bed ways and leadscrews as they have a little surface rust from being in storage. I may or may not try to touch up the paint as well. It has a pretty good coat of paint already. If it doesn't have any antique or historical value, I may try to repaint it in a color similar to the original just to make it look like new.

Again, I'm interested in any input from the community!

Not sure if anyone is following this thread or not, but I haven't gotten any pictures yet. My friend said that the lathe was in working condition. It did run for several minutes. After several minutes of running quite nicely an electrical short brought my testing to an end. The wiring going into the electric motor shorted out with a loud bang. I called it quits for the day. I hope to take some pictures and repair the electrical system today. The short was most likely caused by simple age and corrosion.

Here's a picture (I hope):

Well, it seems to have shown up very small. I don't even know if anyone is looking at this, so I'm not going to spend a lot of time trying to figure it out. If someone wants a bigger picture, just let me know...
