j&s 540 surface grinder help please

hello
i have a jones and shipman 540 surface grinder a beige colour one
and the table traverse wont stay engaged
i beleive there's a shear pin that brakes and prevents constant engagement of the cross travel bit

any ideas ?

Is the lever to the right of the cross slide handwheel down ?

yup thats the one that wont stay engaged

we've found the problem tho
the lever that controls the cross feed travel has a part broken on it
the engagement dog on the inner end

Operators who don`t know what they are doing break that bit.The newer machines have various interlocks and people force things.The favourite here is to try and force the long power feed on while the handwheel is still engaged with the rack.
I`ve got a manual for one of these but seem to remember there`s not much in it.
