Buy me a Beer?

Pay your electric company lots of money.

Maybe someone else has a better way, though.

I could definitely be wrong there, but I thought a friend had 440V/3PH power at his home shop. It involved some type of step up transformer and phase converter. I will give him a call and see what the story is.

a freind just told me its only a matter of paying a service charge and the line to have the other 2 phases ran from the transformer to the house. apparently each home (lot) only receives one of the 3 phases, and when you multiply your current power input x3...well, you get the idea. im gonna call tommorrow, ill see if i can run all the line and what not to save some money and just have the power company make the connections. If not, my freind and i just started a motorcycle shop, we will have to ask for some more square footage and up the lease.

Most residential neighborhoods (at least around here) have only single phase available at the power pole.

If there's only one or two wires at the top between poles (not the drop to your house, that's always three wires), you've got single phase power and the power company will very likely tell you they won't change it out because it would involve re-wiring the entire neighborhood. At that point your only easy choice is a rotary phase converter like one of these: http://shop.ebay.com/?_from=R40&_trk...All-Categories

If the power poles in your neighborhood have three or four wires running between them, it's three phase and changing out the transformer will only cost you an arm and a leg.

Maybe in many other parts of the world, each residence is fed with one phase of a 3 phase transformer with star neutral.
Here in N.America you have a 1 phase 240 volt supply with a centre tap for 120v.
Most service companies will not entertain suppling 3 phase to a residence.

What exactly is the nature of the machine you want 400 for?
Many machines have motors that will convert to 220, and most of the control runs off 120vac 1ph usually.

looks like the power line has 6 legs to pick from... i guess i will find out tommorrow wether i can get it. i would rather just go ahead and get it put in that have to worry about it later AFTER i buy a RPH..i dont plan on having one machine for long.

its for a hurco bmc 3017 15 horse spindle

i think rotary converters have to be matched rather precisely to the load. there are also digital phase converters, which i think are more versatile, but cost many thousands of dollars.

what are you wanting to run, how much power does it use?
