Help on Mill Head for Stainless

All,

I'm converting my CNC Plasma / Router table to Mill Stainless and am having issues finding a spindle / head. The peanut gallery can hold their comments on how a table can't handle stainless. MINE can. Just need the proper speed and torque for the head.

I've found hundereds of spindles all over the internet, ebay etc that run at 24,000RPM. but nothing under 5HP and 150lb that operates at slow speeds.

Specifically I need 1 1/2hp to 3hp that operates between 2,000 and 4,000 rpm.

I've started looking into making my own spindle / head but would really prefer to save that for last resort, as someone out there must make a reasonable head for conversions.

Your assistance and pointers are very appreciated,

Jeff

Have you considered Sherline and X2 spindles? Sherline makes a nice package that's relatively cheap in the spindle world and I hear good things. Tooling may or not be an issue. X2 spindles accept R8 tools and are easily adapted with a pully to put your own motor on them (cheap).

Sherline http://www.sherlineipd.com/spindles.htm

X2 http://littlemachineshop.com/product...ory=-269978449

Hope it helps.

Lukewarm, thanks much for the info. Those websites are right down the alley of what I'm looking for. I hadn't run across them yet.

I really like the Sherline spindles, but the specs on them look to be a little light for milling 1/4" stainless. I'll try calling them tomorrow for any product recommendations. Thanks again!

Jeff
