| Turning or milling? If turning, what holders do you have? If milling, what cutters do you have? Most commonly, it's a bar, sheet or billet for milling. So, what operation do you have to do? Are you needing to mill big surface areas or small features? A good steel milling insert works great as A36 is a fairly mild, easy-machining type. |

| When I wrote "A good steel milling insert works great", I of course meant a carbide insert FOR steel. For instance, if you're doing heavy roughing on a "50 taper" machine, the new Valenite V560 mill is really hard to beat. Up to .400" depth of cut, it's 10-sided inserts can handle upwards of 700sfm and .020 inches per tooth in A36. That's a lot of horsepower required, but metal removal rates through the roof. With a big enough cutter and big spindle HP, you could fill a pickup truck bed with chips before lunch! So...is the OP doing roughing, finishing, or both? What machine? What tool holding system? |
