turning motor shaft to smaller diameter

Hi,

I want to turn a servo motor shaft to a smaller diameter to fit a planetary gear setup?

I thought about clamping the motor in the jaw, apply voltage to the motor so the shaft turns, then machine the shaft to smaller diameter.

Anyone tried this already?

David

Id be worried about putting too much pressure on the motors bearings from the cutting.. perhaps running it and then running a grinder on the shaft.. set it up right and shield the motor from the dust and it should work OK..

David,

I'm not a machinist I'm afraid, but you may like to look at Arie's posts on the zone. Post #45 of this...

...shows how he machined the shaft of his spindle.

It is an awesome thread.

Best wishes

Sure, you can do it. I just connected a battery to my dc servo and reduced the shaft from 6mm to 5mm for encoders. Granted that is a fairly small amount, any more than that I would probably use a different method. I used a file and thin strips of sandpaper. I took my time and periodically checked the shaft diameter at several locations. It doesnt take much pressure, I was more concerned about getting dust in the bearings. I did two motors, and they came out really nice.

if you do it, turn the breaker off for the lathe. i can see someone turning the lathe on by rote and the wires and anything they snag wrapping around the chuck
