    Question few newbee questions

Hello all, first off I’m new here and new to cnc. I wanted to get something fabricated that I am making in Rhino. I want it to be made out of plastic would a cnc or rapid
prototyping machine be able to do this. The link below I have two model pic examples. Pic1, my question is, is the machine able to cut a shape like this and give the sides a radius? For pic 2 you will see my screw hole things (don't know the right term for it) how would they make the threads for the screws? Do I have to model the hole threads as well, or do you usually tell them the screw size that will go there and they drill the threads from that?

    One more question:
Also about how much does it cost to get something fabricated?

    Thanks,
    Mark

I cannot tell exactly what you want to do from the drawings and your descriptions.

Your part looks to be some kind of shell, with 4 stand offs that are tapped.

What size is it? If the part is 12" x 12" x 2" for example, I'd say that it could easily be rapid prototyped. The problem is the cost, anywhere from $1000 to $5000 I'd guess.

It can be milled out completely on a CNC. Usually the holes are drilled and hand tapped on something like you show, but they can be tapped on the CNC.

Another low cost option would be to mill a mold out of wood and build a vacuum form press.

The tapped standoffs would be made seperately and glued in place.

It really depends upon the part size, but its pretty expensive to get these parts made (prototypes) in a professional job shop.

Is that a guitar body? It looks hallow in the right view. If it's hallow, it will be considerably more expensive. If it's just the body, that can be machined for under a few hundred dollars at the right shop.

The pics were just an example; I’m still working on the main model that will need to be fabricated. It will be a shell/hollow like that with fillet edges. its going to be around 15” *12” *3”. It’s for a hobby electronic project I’m working on. It will be the casing for the electronic components. I’m trying to find a cheap way to does this, I was thinking I would be better off with plastic, but would doing it a different way be cheaper? Like with metal, is there any way or any tips of making a hollow case with fillet edges like that my self at home for a prototype?

    Thanks,
    Mark

There are quite a few places that sell casting supplies for exactly what you want to do.

CNC isn't required, but it might allow you to make a more accurate model to use for your molds.

Thanks for the link and information, any recommendation on what material I should use to make my model with for making the model? If I print out my prints and then cut out a solid model from wood, would the wood be all right to use for making the mold?

    Thanks,
