We have a job where we drill and tap (5/16-18) 6 holes in one part. We receive stamped parts from the customer. We do thousands of these parts at a time. We used to be able to do 1200 parts with one drill. This most recent batch we can hardly get 50 parts with one drill. We had the customer check into the material and they sent the bill of lading from the steel supplier. It indicates that the material is "Hot Rolled Pickled / Oiled SAE J403 1008". The specs on that bill of lading are C:0.0400 / Mn:0.483 / P:0.0130 / Si:0.0200 / Al:0.0300. We were able to have a local scrap yard analyze one of the parts and they said they actually contain Si:0.250 / Cr:0.058 / Mn:0.811 / Fe:98.850 / Nb:0.034. I know that the two do not include all the same information but that is the best I could do.
Does anyone have any ideas why things are going so bad this time? Any help would be great.
