It sounds like a beam alignment issue - the farther the head gets from the source, the more of a problem it becomes.

Here's a guide: Laser Beam Alignment

    Hi
I use a different aproach instead of tape what mostly get burned thrue I use smal pieces of 1/8 hardboard cut at the same size as the outside of the mirror holder then put tape strips on ether side marke the center . stick the piece an the mirror holder exactly and tape the strips on. only then I start with alignment. this way I can shoot many points before changing and especially when going over the whole laser area then I can see where the laser point is on evey location.
    greetings
    walt
