Can someone identify this gearmotor?

I got this particular motor as part of an assembly off of e-bay. I'm not sure what the assembly was or what it did but it had a ton of bearings and gears, what looks to be encoders for positioning (i.e. join the wires, turn the shaft and no mechanical resistance).

The motor housing has several markings on it:

80045/188469-2 I think this has to do with physical dimensions.

6834 ???

000531 obviously the serial #
SERIAL

CEDAR ENGINEERING DIV.
CONTROL DATA CORP.
SYNCHRONOUS MOTOR - GEARHEAD
TYPE NO. SYG18016

Google has been of no help to date. I'm attaching pictures for reference.

It most likely is an AC stepper motor, these are designed in conjunction with a phase shift capacitor to run off a fixed frequency AC supply, (synchronous).

Well, now. A couple of other questions related to that then. Is there a way to measure the specs of the motor itself using a multimeter or something? Would this sort of motor be able to be used as a spindle for a tabletop? I've tried for well over a year to find a datasheet on this particular item without any luck whatsoever and I'd like to know its capabilities so I can do something with it. The thing is heavy, I'd say somewhere between 2-3 lbs and very well built. I figure I should be able to do something with it but I'd hate to try until I know how much current I can run through it.

It is a bit hard to obtain the data empirically without knowing the technology, Superior Electric (now Kollmorgen) used to be a leader in these kind of motors.
Their web site might help in obtaing more information.

I wish that I had two of these so I could dissect them to learn the technology. As it stands, I can't. If I were to take them apart to a certain point and take pictures would that help to identify some of the technology involved?
