I was just wondering what type of output is sent from a driver to a stepper motor. Is it just a DC pulse of current? If that is the case, can you connect a darlington pair of power transistors to the output of a driver that puts out say 12V and connect another power supply with a higher voltage to the darlington pair and put out some higher voltage maybe in to 48V to 84V range? Assuming the darlington pair has a high enough switching rating to handle the pulsing frequency. |

| Most of the better step motor drives measure the current going to the motor in addition to just switching the phases. As a result, you would have to do some kind of current division to scale what the drive is seeing as well as the switching. My call on it is that it would be easier to just build a drive from one of the control chips and the discrete parts than it would be to bubblegum extra current capacity on an existing drive. There are a couple of these projects being discussed over in the open source hardware forum. BobH |
