| With irons my preference is to always go over rather than underate, as with a large wattage the time taken on a solder connection is reduced, rather than having to keep the iron on the connection for an extended time in order for a good solder flow, this tend to put more stress on the components. | A high wattage iron connected to a dimmer switch works well. I had that setup for years. If cost is not a problem, I would really recommend a temperature controlled iron. I bought a Hako 900 tip but made my own controller. It is so convenient to have something that is ready for use 30 seconds after power up. |
