Peltier heat pumps

I'm thinking of using a 2.2kw water cooled spindle motor for my flatbed router. The 'water cooling' may give me a problem and I was thinking if anyone has used a peltier heat pump IC to do the cooling. These devices can get pretty cool very quickly and take up little room. One of these attached to a small copper tank 4 inches square with an inlet and outlet for water should do the trick.
Has anyobne tried these devices.

Thanks

George

Yup I've used em.....You still have to move the heat from the Peltier ie by means of air or water.

Thanks Kipper, I was thinking of using a 4 inch or so PC type fan. Have you got any details on your setup. I wouldnt mind having a look at some pics/details.

I used a 230W one to cool a PC a few years back....@ 15V and 15A it was a kind of cash drain....still had to have a whacking great fan to cool the water in a radiator.

Dear George,

In my limited practical experience, Peltiers never came even remotely close to the maximum cooling specification that they claim. If you have a 2.2 kW spindle, do you know what cooling you need in the water circuit? My guess ( and I could well be wrong), is that it is a lot more that Kipper's 230 watts. I would ditch the peltier, and use a fan cooled radiator on the water circuit.

This thread might be useful...

Anyway, I wish you all luck.

Best wishes,

Martin

Thanks Martin.

Seems that this a very complicated issue.

There are of course various other options.

A friend suggested that i hook up the motor to the house water supply and dump the water leaving the motor into the drain. Now I'm not on a water meter and being a Scotsman that sounds pretty good to me, however not very good for the envionmentalist and water saving enthusiasts.

Second suggestion of mine is to use a small motorcycle/scooter radiator with a fan for cooling and a pump to pass the water round the system. This could probably be the best solution, altrenatively

Third suggestion is to use a small heater matrix from a car. These seem to have a tighter or more compact matrix than a radiator so that might do the job.

Problem is I have no idea of what 'flow rate' to try to push round a 1.5 or 2kw chinese motor.

Maybe this thread will produce some lively debate. If this is not in the right area then perhaps one of the moderators would be kind enough to move it to the rightful one. I'd be very grateful.

Thanks

George

Dear George.

Random additional suggestions..

1) Bury some copper pipe in the ground and pump the water through the loop.

2) Use a secondhand lager chiller (you can find them on ebay)

3) get a cold water aquarium chiller. They can be either evaporative or gas-cycle types.

4) have a look at this..http://www.refrigeration-engineer.co...ead.php?t=4273

As regards the flow rate through the spindle, I guess you measure the water temperature as it comes out of the spindle, and fiddle with the flow rate until the temperature is within the spindle manufacturer's specification.

Best wishes,

Martin

Many thanks Rowbare.

Martin, I see you've had a look also. Allyd 's setup is very good indeed. I hope he will be able to let us have a little more detail.
Than fan seems to be attached to a small cooling rad of some sort if I'm correct. I wonder if this is locally made or sourced elsewhere?

Any clue's

Thanks

George

Dear George,

If you go to the youtube link, there is a page you can click on that "advertises" the PC liquid cooling kit. All the components can be bought in one package. Fans, radiator, hoses and fittings. I will try and find it, but maybe not now.

Best wishes,

Martin
