Servo power connectors for enclosure.

Im looking for some type of connector for my electronics enclosure. my 4 servos are running off a 65v 20A PS, Each motor is rated at 12A max.

I was looking at DIN and XLR power connectors at my local electronics store, but they kept telling me its not for power only signals.

Are those type of connectors ok to use for power? If not, what type of panel mount connectors is everyone else using for DC servo power?

Any advice is greatly appriciated!

Thanks..

I used the XLR connectors for the power on my servos along with DB9 connectors for the encoders. Machine was built several years ago and I have had no problems with that.

I believe the max amp rating of my motors is about 20 amps (I have the geckos maxed out on the current limit) but normally run I think about 10-12 amps max.

What voltage are you running those servos? DC I assume?

Just want to make sure they will be ok.. Did you also use the Microphone wire?

Phife,
I am running 53V DC and best I can remember, I used 14 ga. wire (the biggest I could stuff into the connectors on the geckos!!!
For the wire between the servo and the XLR, I used (14ga ?) SO cord (extension cord) wire that I got from my local hardware. This is rubber covered and fairly immune to the problems of coolant etc.

Hi,
XLR should be fine but make sure to get a good brand like Neutric or Deltron and not the cheapest stuff you can find. Deltron's 7000-series is rated 250V and 16A for the 3-pole version and 10A for the 4-pole version.

Another option might be the Neutric Speakon, the STX-series is rated 250V, 40A, has metal shells and IP54 rating when mated. They cost a little more than the XLR's but still quite OK for what they "can do". There are cheaper versions of the Speakon too with plastc shells etc if that'll work for you.

Regarding the cable I'd stay away from microphone cord as it is optimised for signals and not power, the individual wires are usualy quite thin. I'd use at least a shielded 2*1.5mm˛ (AWG16), more likely 2*2.5mm˛ (AWG14-12) for 10A+ applications.

HTH
/Henrik.
