Thumbs down Source for small motors

Hi I am doing some engineering on a new product and am looking for a small motor.

There seems to be no suppliers in my area that i can locate for this size motors. Surplus sometimes has them but not enough for my needs.

I'm looking for a motor in the 150-200w range and physical dimensions can be 1"-1.49" round by up to 7-8" long. 12volt system. Will be used for a small piston pump in a custom application.

I would appreciate any help in locating a supplier.

Thanks.

Buy me a Beer?

I take it these do not need to be servo grade?
What about automotive type?
If you have a Motor supply outlet, they often carry a decent inventory or can get motors that may be cheaper than a particular dedicated automotive part.

rest assured i tried all the localy available sources....Most automotive motors, at least the ones you buy al la carte as it were, are in the 3" OD round area.

But thanks for the reply Al

and yes they don't have to be servo grade.

What sort of quantity are you looking for, is this a one time shot or an ongoing project?

Currently we are in design phase so looking for a single motor to design around.

The specs. of this motor must not be fluctuating allot (meaning a stable design or one that is readily available)

And the motor must be obtainable at a future date (after design issues have been worked out) at
1. reasonable prices (whatever that turns out to be) and
2. in quantity (probably 500-1000 units at first)

I think your physical specs may constrain you a bit.
Trying to get a 1/3hp DC motor that is only 1.5" dia is pushing it a bit.
The only motor this wattage & compact that I can remember approaching this is a BLDC motor.

Unfortunately I think you may be right, which is kinda funny cause I build little Brushless motors for my RC airplanes that are 200-500watts.

And those motors are like a 10th the size of the one I'm looking for.

Servo motors are way above the quality level we need.

We are looking for an intermittent 150-200watt motor that drives an air pump. So accuracy in position is not a concern.

Generally, servo style motors are higher in price than other motors, by a factor of 10 or more.

if you look at the air pumps for motorcycle air ride systems on the market you'll get an idea of the quality (ie cheapness) of the motor we are looking for.

Have you looked at radio control model electric motors?

There are some very affordable ones around, especially the in-runner BLDC types, that would seem to fit your requirement.

For an idea of what's available, and the sort of price to expect to pay for a motor and controller, take a look at the "brushless motors" menu on the Hobby City site here: http://www.hobbycity.com/hobbycity/store/uh_index.asp

I've used a couple of their bigger 2800 watt outrunner motors for a project. Cost was reasonable and build quality was good. For reference, the 2800 watt motors I have were around $45 each, plus about another $30 for the 100 amp controller.

I'm toying with the idea of using a small in-runner model motor as a spindle drive myself. I'd like to fit a collet directly to the motor, as they have decent bearings that are designed to take axial and radial loads from a propeller during high g, high rpm, model manoeuvres. Finding a decent 1/8 collet at a good price is one of the current challenges..........

Jeremy

Actually that's what got me thinking about this project...but the motors for Direct drive Rc model applications are too high rpm...so i would have to gear them...which would raise prices.

I've actually found a few that are close but they are not "close enough" and really is a shame as they were a 10.00 motor. but the size was off by like .125" and my design doesn't have enough room for it.

Geof will become famous soon enough

Find a lower wattage motor with the OD you can accommodate and a through shaft, gang them end to end with couplers on the shaft and wire them in parallel.
