| Hello Everyone, I'm designing a 50V 8A+ Bipolar Stepper Motor driver. I'm new to Discrete H-Bridges and plus I'm not very familiar with all the new MOSFETS and MOSFET Drivers in the market. I was wondering if you can share your experience with MOSFETS and MOSFET Drivers. So far the Drivers I came across are
And The MOSFETS
Well I came across plenty of other parts as well. Lets jus say the more U seek the More U find in this case. Just before I decide on one part I come across another which seemed better(btw My knowledge on MOSFETS is Very Limited. So cant really say if its Really a Better one I jus found). So I was wondering if someone can help me pick the right Driver and MOSFET for a Driver with the following Specs
Please Advice! Thank You. Joe! |

| Hello Joe, My two cents: I've used the HIP4081A which is similar to your choice. I had a hard time getting rid of a sneaky current loop so I would recommend you watch out for proper layout and use a single ground return point. As for MOSFETs - and I'll likely draw the ire of some here with this comment - I'd go for the lowest RDSon on a rated device. Highspeed, etc are not that important in this application. Keeping in mind also that voltage rating should be high enough to account for motor back EMF and a few techniques like a parallel diode across the FET input resistor helps drain it quickly and avoid cross conduction. I like Atmel micros better than Microchip's but that might be a moot point soon if Microchip succeeds in gobbling up Atmel. Doh! JR |

| Thanks JR for your input ![]() I was told IR2104 and IRF540N is a well tried n tested pair to use in H-Bridges. I'm currently looking at using them in my driver. Please share your experiences using the IR2104 and the IRF540N. Thank You, Joe! |
