220v Outlet Questions

Okay, I've got my outlet wired up. I am using a 30 amp breaker. A black wire leads from one pole, a white from the other and of course the ground goes to ground. I am using a heavy duty 2 pole air conditioning outlet. I run the black to one pole on the outlet, the white to the other pole, and the ground obviously to ground. Or should I combine black and white to one pole and run another wire to Neutral (I don't think this is the correct way, but want to be sure)? Does any of this sound incorrect?

Now here is the real questions. I am using this outlet to run a fenner contrex m-drive to run my spindle's motor. The drive states that it can use 110-220 as input. So for my wiring, I want to run one pole of the outlet to L1, the other pole goes to Neutral/L2, and ground to ground. Does this sound correct?

If you are wiring the spindle drive from a 220v outlet, then you use the L1 L2 to 220v the neutral does not enter the picture, not in N. America, anyway.
Do not connect any neutral to ground anywhere but at the panel.
If you are connecting this up to 220vac outlet then you have 2 'hot' conductors and a ground.

Al,
The motorhome bays around Grand Rapids Michigan, now all have 230 volt single phase plugs with ground and neutral. I dont know if thats new code or maybe just if your over a certain amperage or what. 230 single phase don't enter into my world very often.

Yes, that is probably to support both 240v and 120v & neutral circuits, but it would appear in this case the neutral is not needed.
Or that is the way I interpreted it.
In other words, if you are not using, or don't need the neutral, don't run it.
