The first link describes the circuit as a AC motor controller which is a bit of a misnomer and might fool someone to think they can run an AC motor other than a Universal type. It is actually a DC motor controller with the bridge present. If you only want to control the Universal hand-tool-router type etc motor, then the bridge can be eliminated and a triac used instead, I can dig up the circuit I have used in the past with components and post it.

thanks guys, I'll be controlling a small
sewing machine motor and/or ryobi ss50 (I got it for $30 CAD, demo).
My way of ordering online is limited to M.O. and it cost me more to do so.

For such small motors you might be able to use a lamp dimmer with a few additional snubbing componets or just use it as a source for most of the parts.

For small loads like that (or a Porter Cable Laminate Trimmer) Harbor Freight sells a router speed controller - you can keep your eyes open on ebay or HF's web site for sales - seems like I got mine for about 15-20 bucks. Cheers - Jim

Have not tried it but apparently the trick to use a light dimmer as a universal motor speed control is to put a 100 ohm 1/2W resistor in series with a 0.22uF capacitor, across the triac power leads.
