Hi. I hope to start my cnc table this week, if the bearing turn upp in the post. I was thinking should I add encoders to the table. If, what are the real benfits in using them? I have been looking at some that go on the ends of the stepper motors, Also in one of the cnc list they have a encoder read-out box that looks ok to do the job. Auzze |

| The general oppinion is that encoders on the table dont work well due to the backlash, they will cause the motors to constantly over correct and generally carry on like pork chops. Stick with encoders on the motor shafts. |

| Sorry, maybe I misunderstood your question, if you want encoders purely as a means of a DRO signal the table would be best as it will give you a reading closer to its true position than would encoders on the motor shafts. Having said that, I would suggest running with encoders on the motor shafts as it is the preferable method for a cnc application and your software should have a DRO mode anyway unless of course you want to be really flash and have a setup where you use encoders on the motor for cnc work and encoders on the table for manual work. Hope I havn't confused you... Splint |

| What software do you plan on using? Are you using steppers? With steppers, you most likely will have no use for encoders. And no software to read them.
