You 'should' be able to, probably...
I know it's kind of an ambiguous reply, but from what I remember, the standard pin connectors on common 'read PC spec' DB9 were rated for something just over 3A per pin, up to around 60v...this is going back quite some time to older process control equipment...
If you are considering using these for 4 wire [two coil arrangement] steppers, then by using two pins for each of the four connections required would give you enough for most 23 and some 34 series stepper motor / drive combinations...
Of course twisted pair style of wiring is recommended, as well as using the 'spare' as a ground, and possibly an extra for chassis ground and / or shield wire...my personal preference is to terminate shield wiring only on the drive end...
