A little bit about Scott and where he works:

Scott Shumate: Problem-Solving Enthusiasm Spearheads Metro Ethernet Innovation

Shumate's software design helps bring affordable Ethernet to metropolitan market

Scott Shumate
After accidentally killing all the fish in his salt-water aquarium, Scott Shumate might have agreed with his wife's suggestion that he has too many hobbies. The aquarium is just the latest in a long list of personal interests, including building radio-controlled airplanes, replicating vintage video games, scuba diving, and woodworking.

But Shumate, a technical leader in the Cisco desktop switch business unit, is hard at work restoring the aquarium's ecosystem. He simply can't resist the lure of learning about a subject through hard-earned problem solving. And such enthusiastic tenacity certainly applies to his efforts creating industry-leading networking equipment for Cisco.

"I'm definitely enjoying my career," Shumate says. "I'm a logically minded person so I enjoy problem solving, and this career throws nothing but problems at you."

His latest endeavor at Cisco as the chief software engineer for the Catalyst 3750 Metro Series was no exception. Though full of complex hardware and software design challenges, that simply made the job that much more enjoyable for Shumate.

The Catalyst 3750 Metro Series is Cisco's first Ethernet access switch designed specifically for the service provider metro Ethernet market. The Catalyst 3750 Metro Series represents another step in Cisco's efforts to improve the way companies run their networks. Rather than forcing organizations to translate their Ethernet-based local area networks (LANs) for transport over public networks, the Catalyst 3750 extends the reach of Ethernet communications across cities and regions. The result is a much simpler and more cost-effective way to link together geographically disparate LANs.

The Catalyst 3750 can't claim any particular breakthrough technology but, rather, is the culmination of successfully merging two technologies into one. Namely, Shumate and the Catalyst 3750 team needed to combine a network processor with an Ethernet chipset to create the best of two worlds: Ethernet simplicity and public network performance.

Shumate's most significant contribution to the Catalyst 3750 Metro Series project was working with the network processor and the associated software which drives the Catalyst 3750 Metro Series switch's high-performance features. The first step in that task was to find a network processor which could meet the performance and cost requirements for the switch. After searching in vain for three months, the team heard of a new processor that was in development. It offered all the attributes they wanted, but it only existed on paper at the time. To reach the ambitious goals they set for the Catalyst 3750 Metro Series, Shumate and the team felt they had to take a chance.

"We stuck our necks out a little bit," he says. "But the gamble paid off in the end."

Shumate says developing software for such an advanced network processor was one of the most satisfying challenges of his career. Though he and the team benefited from work another Cisco team was conducting on the processor for a different project, the task was still daunting.

"An advanced network processor such as the one we were using has many smaller parallel processors, which greatly complicates software design," Shumate says. "There were a slew of hardware issues which really required me to wear half a hat of a software engineer and half a hat of a hardware engineer."

Shumate's most notable accomplishments include expanding the queuing system of the original Catalyst 3750 from four queues to over 8,000 for the Catalyst 3750 Metro Series. Such an extensive hierarchy of queues gives service providers the ability to create a multitude of service levels for their customers, helping drive new and more profitable connectivity offerings.

Shumate also wrote software for encapsulating and tagging all traffic flowing into the switch with MPLS labels. Again, such features bring much-needed carrier-class capabilities to metro Ethernet traffic.

"I had never really worked so in-depth with an advanced network processor before, so the whole experience was particularly gratifying," Shumate says.

Shumate's enthusiasm for taking on new challenges has paid big dividends for Cisco. The Catalyst 3750 Metro Series is now one of the most impressive metro Ethernet switches on the market, bringing to service providers and their customers unrivaled performance and configuration flexibility, all at a cost which will open up metro Ethernet to a far wider array of businesses.

Let's hope for the fish that Shumate finds the same success with salt-water aquariums.

When you open the "video", select "Tech & Innovation" in upper left channel. Then select "Metro Switching" thumbnail to left of player screen. Hope this works for you..
..Just some interesting dialogue... especially in the last few comments by these two talented individuals!
