capacitors

i have access to some36000uf @35 volts capacitors, can i wire them together to handle 85 volts? if i can it would take 3 would it not? thanks in advance greg

3 in series will handle the voltage, but the capacitance would be dimenished very much. If I remember right the formula is 1/C1 + 1/C2 + 1/C3 = 1/Ctot.

i do not understand the c/1 +c2 +c3 part of your reply. they are 36.000uf, i need a min of 20,000. hooking 3 in series would ? give me 105 volts what does it drop the macro fabs too? if i needed too could i hook 1 or what is needed in parallel? thanks for the help.i fair @a lot of things but not electronics, but i am trying to learn. greg

It equals 36,000/3 = 12,000µf (3 in series), working voltage 35v x 3 = 105vw.

If I did my elementry calculations right, you get 12,000 uF from 3 36,000 uF caps.
