My Powersupply

I've been using a cheap 3A 24V powersupply on my router but now I've moved on to a heavier machine and the motors are stalling. I'm thinking if I can get some more amps to them they should run better. I've had this Power-One power supply for some time now but never hooked it up, don't really like playing with electricity and didn't want to mess with it but looks like the time is now. It is a 24v 12a power supply but I've always heard you needed, I think, an unregulated power supply. Don't know which this is but do you think this one will work good for me? That is a linear regulated power supply Regulated is better than unregulated, and I personally prefer linear to switching type.
It's just that normally you can get away with unregulated as when driving servos a bit of fluctuation is no big deal.

I stumbled across a post that said Gecko 201's could only handle 7A per phase? I'm assuming that since my powersupply is 12A I won't be able to use it?

I'm using 3 - 201's with 1.2a 6V stepper motors.

Barkster, the current rating of the motors must not be exceeded. 1.2A per phase-2.4A per motor x 3Axis=7.2A max current. You should be fine with the 12A supply, infact I think the Geckos allows you to derate the current demand by 10 or 20% (not real sure on this, anyone know firsthand). Your Geckos can easily handle the 1.2A phase current, just set them up not to exceed that (bad things will happen to the steppers).

The Geckos can only Deliver 7a/phase. They will only draw as much current from your supply as they need to.

Thanks for the info, I think I had put a resistor on the gecko to limit to 1.2A. I just thought that the drive couldn't handle more than 7A input but that is just the max it can deliver. Thanks
