How do i control a pneumatic sol valve

How do i control the sol valve?
It is a SMC SYJ5220-5LOU-M5-Q sol/sol valve.
In the diagram i only see 2 leads on each side, which i assume the leads for powering the valve.
Do i need a relay or something else for controlling this valve?
I am going to use a PIC16F877A to control the pneumatics operations, which the logics are in form of 5 volts.

THank you..

A relay is a typical method, yes.

It is typical to use an output from either your PLC or your PC to control a relay which in turn controls the device.

I am not familiar with this particular valve but it most likely uses pilot air pressure (internally ported within the valve) to shift the spool, so if you are trying to shift the spool without air pressure, you will not likely see movement by the way....

This valve uses a 24VDC, but my PLC output 5VDC.

Perfect. Finding a relay will be easy with those two voltages.

use a 5vdc relay and a 24v power supply to power the valve

Here are a couple examples I drew up for controlling a valve via a relay through a PIC output using sinking rather that sourcing function. They may not be perfect for your application, but it should get you a base to start with.

The pair on the left is for individual control with snubbing diodes to protect the PIC inputs from inductive kick back of the relay coils. The Solenoids do not really need them, but if grounds of the 2 supplies do become common, noise spikes could be an issue.

The pair on the right uses one relay with NO/NC so that one valve or the other is driven from a single outputs off/on state.

Your choice?

Oh, and make sure the relay coil current is well below the PIC's output max if you intend on driving more than one relay!
