Will this work for a CNCMill?

I pulled this out of an old flatbed scanner. In case the label doesn't show up, it says:

STH-39D1126
1.8 Deg/Step 4.1 Ohm

The power supply from the scanner says:
Output for motor
10V 0.4A

Is this the voltage needed for the stepper? Too bad I tore up the power supply. Will this have enough torque to turn any of the axis? How would I go about testing it?

I've also got a pen plotter that should have some steppers in it, will they likely be able to run a mill?

Thanks

*EDIT: Sorry about the large image files. Here's some smaller ones.

Also, with mach3 will i have to buy stepper controllers as well, or does the program handle that?

Hi,

Unfortunately that stepper will be little to no use in a cnc mill application.

Mach3 sends pulses to your printer port; you will need stepper controllers between the port and your stepper motors.

Thanks. Why will it not work?

Hi,

Unless you are planning a very small PCB mill or engraver I would say it will not have enough torque.
Can you find any info regarding holding torque for this stepper?

The only thing I've been able to find on it is "No information found." Torque was a worry of mine since all it did was move a scanner bulb and imager back and forth. I am however planning a small, say 12" x 18" mill, and i want to machine foam or plaster with it. But, if it's all it can run, I wouldn't mind a PCB mill either. Thanks for the help

Do you think the gearing could have increased the torque enough?

The problem with gearing down stepper motors is that the torque is lost as speed increases; so unless very slow speeds are ok you gain nothing.

you could use these motors to make a really small guy but it will not have much power. It could be an economical learning tool but probably won't satisfy your demands. Some decently sized motors are not terribly expensive and will give you a much better machine.

Is allthread good enough for a small PCB mill, about 7"x12" cutting area? Also, If I pull steppers out of a plotter, will there be a useable driver as well?

This is just my opinion but I would say no; but this will depend on how fine you wish to mill the traces. It may be worth your while reading through this and maybe asking your question there. http://www.cnczone.com/forums/showthread.php?t=23363

Also this thread http://www.cnczone.com/forums/showthread.php?t=19362 for stepper motor and drives from plotters.
